Botox, the anti-wrinkle treatment, could soon be offered by the NHS to patients with chronic migraines according to NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence).NICE say Botox jab should be offered by NHS for patients with chronic migraine.
It is believed that over 700,000 people in the UK suffer from chronic migraine; extreme headaches that often cause nausea leave the sufferers exceptionally sensitive to light and sound. Professor Carole Longson, Director of the Health Technology Evaluation Centre at NICE said “Chronic migraines are extremely debilitating and can significantly affect a person’s quality of life.
Botox was approved as a treatment for chronic migraine in 2010 and NICE is now considering whether or not the NHS should fund it. NICE estimated that the cost of using Botox would be £349.40 for every cycle of treatment.
Exactly how Botox prevents chronic migraines is unknown. Some postulate that the neurotoxin may work by relaxing muscles or blocking pain signals.
The Migraine Trust said it welcomed the recommendation to use Botox. Chief Executive, Wendy Thomas said “Chronic migraine is a disabling condition and in many cases ruins people’s lives.
“For patients who suffer from this condition, Botox may offer a safe and effective preventative treatment option to help them manage their migraine and improve their quality of life.”
Dr Fayyaz Ahmed, chair of British Association for the Study of Headache, said: “The headache experts with first-hand experience in treating chronic migraine know how debilitating the condition can be for some patients, and Botox can be a life changing treatment. We are pleased that NICE has recommended Botox for those who have failed to respond to first-line treatments.”
